Spiritual Self-Inquiry

Writing Practice Group (by invitation)
~ Explore the Inner Landscape
On Hiatus
15 Oakcrest Road, Ithaca

Inspired by Basho's Journey to the Deep North, the writing practice group uses tanka and other forms of writing to cultivate insight and perception.  Tanka is a Japanese form of poetry that predates haiku.  Tanka can be combined with prose to allow the writer ample time to express his perceptions succinctly.  Exploring inner landscapes, this group provides an opportunity to use creative writing for self-inquiry. You don't need to be a writer to join this group. While the work of self-clarification will make you a better writer, your writing is merely the byproduct of your effort. Don't mistake the byproduct for the goal!  Examples of writing practice by Leslie and her students can be found in Writing to Awaken and Tanka Practice.  Each of these is now available in the Tompkins County Library.

The basic format of this group is that members bring their writing with copies for the other members.  The writer reads their piece out loud and we all respond.  Sometimes a discussion will develop exploring the themes suggested by the writer. Alternatively, members may work with a writing exercise.  Leslie guides the discussion but encourages all to participate in sharing their responses and offering their observations.

If you are interested in joining this group please contact Leslie.  She will request an individual meeting with you prior to inviting you to join so that she can learn a little about you and you can get to know her, too.  The writing practice group sessions are $25.
